Hearing Local Talent Perform Leaves Critic With A Song in His Heart

by Bob Angelone for the Shore Herald
July, 1999

BELMAR - With considerably less than a song in my heart, I went to see Nicole D’Angelo at Amici’s Restaurant in Belmar (Formerly Jack Baker’s Lobster Shanty).  But when I left, my heart was filled with song and music.

D’Angelo’s singing is great, but her musical talent on the instruments she played was more than impressive.  Her range of musical instruments is enhanced by having personally recorded complete orchestral or backup music onto floppy disks (sequencing) which play in her keyboard.  By playing the guitar, harmonica, and keyboard during her performance with added backup music, she sounds like a complete musical group, whether a three piece combo or a full symphonic orchestra.  With all that said, I need to describe her singing talent.

Close your eyes when you listen to her singing.  You will soon lose yourself in the moment and not know who is actually singing.  No matter if it’s Billy Joel’s “Piano Man” or Celene Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On,” you will get the distinct impression that it is the original performer.

The truth is that since I was a little kid and grew out of the Sunday afternoon clown at the restaurant we frequented on Long Island, N.Y., I’ve had little use for restaurant entertainers.  D’Angelo has changed my mind.  As I sat there opposite her Dad, I could see the glow of pride on his face and it was well deserved.

D’Angelo’s transition from piano to harmonica to guitar was amazingly smooth.  Her ability to go from songs like “La Bamba” to “Summertime” was also quite extraordinary.

She is the most unbelievable entertainer I have ever seen in my life and can’t understand why she isn’t already famous.

D’Angelo appears Tuesday nights at Amici’s Family Style restaurant.  Go in for a cool drink or a meal and enjoy her performances from 6-10p.m.  She takes audience requests from a booklet showing her exhaustive repertoire.

You can book D’Angelo for your special event or party by calling her agent Rosemary at (732) 280-1499.  Nicole D’Angelo -- she’s “Unforgettable!”
